Welcome to Living Witness Productions
We are excited to welcome our newest resident Living Witness Productions a group of photographers/cinematographers
We were lucky to be able to grab Simon, founder of Living Witness Productions, for a quick chat to find out more about him and his growing business.
Tell us your journey to founding your company?
From a young age, I love watching nature documentaries and initially I wanted to be David Attenborough, but a broad Northern Irish accent doesn't really compare to his soothing voice. So instead I thought the next best thing was capturing the beautiful world we live in. Fast-forward a few years and after my photos were gaining recognition and I had started videoing various events I decided, the summer after finishing my A-Levels, to start a business, Living Witness Productions. That was in 2012 and as of 2015 it is my full-time job, and I am now looking forward to expanding my business even further with my new office area in Eighty81.
Tell me about your business in one sentence?
We are a group of photographers/cinematographers started in 2012, looking to express ourselves through our medium, tell interesting stories and work with other talented creatives. We are based in Northern Ireland but have travelled all over the world creating art.
What were the biggest initial hurdles to starting/building your business and how did you overcome them?
Initial hurdles to starting my business were gaining an understanding of my industry and how a business actually works. At the time none of my family owned a business nor had I taken any courses in business management. It was then I realised I had to work with other creatives and business owners to understand how to run a successful company, and at the same time learnt working with other creatives generates the best content.
How do you define success?
I define success purely from the enjoyment I get from a shoot and quality of the end content for my clients. I love what I do and want to continue to improve my ability to create and capture stories.
What is the best advice you’ve been given?
"Have your eyes fixed on your goals and not what other people are doing around you." In this day and age, it can be easy to compare yourselves to other people in your industry. There is a thin line between aspiring to reach the quality of work of someone you look up to and trying to be the person you look up to.
Why have you chosen to become a resident of Eighty81?
The thought of having a work home divide was the initial driving force that brought me to eighty81, but it was the quality of service they provided at a very affordable cost and the thought of working with other creatives that made my mind certain I was coming here.
What has been your greatest moment of success?
I've worked with some cool people and at great events. However, my biggest moment of success was simply going full time. I love my job and now that I can make a living out of it is a true dream come true. I always remind myself of that anytime I'm bogged down with work or feeling stress, that I am so lucky and blessed to be in the position I'm in currently.
How do you see your company expanding over the next few years?
There are certain things that are in progress that will answer that question for themselves. (follow Living Witness Productions on Instagram and Facebook and keep an eye out for activity happening early 2018).
What would be your top advice for anyone looking to start a business?
My advice is just to start it already! If you're reading this and you have an idea in your head make it a reality. The worse that can happen is a failure and it's in those moments you learn the most about yourself, grow and make yourself stronger for future endeavours. Just go for it!
Thank you so much, Simon, for taking the time to chat with us.
