Meet Our Member: Shane Birney Architects

A big thanks to Shane for taking the time out of his busy schedule to answer a couple of our questions.

Tell me in one sentence about your business?

Shane Birney Architects is an architecture practice based in Derry~Londonderry working on arts, education, residential and urban design projects.

How do you define success?

I’m not sure I yearn for success. Albert Einstein stated 'Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.'

What is the best advice you’ve been given?

In relation to the business, when spending an age choosing a name for the practice, I was told to stop over thinking it, you are the brand, stick your name on it and get over it.

Why have you chosen to become a resident of Eighty81?

Various reasons, the location, the building but mainly working in an open plan studio based environment, with other creatives to bounce off.

Is Eighty81 living up to your expectations?

Very much so, it has given the practice a focal point both from a working point of view but also a social element. We have been able to collaborate with others within the hub, which we had hoped for, but the seminars and talks organised by Eighty81 which we weren’t aware of, have been really enjoyable too.

Any news you would like to tell us?

Due to workload we have taken on another architect, Catherine has joined us and adds a wealth of public sector experience to the team. This expansion is a natural byproduct of our move to Eighty81 which we hope continues!
